Letter to the Parents

Dear Parent/Coach:

Welcome to Bible Blast! This program is designed for families with four-year olds through 5th graders.

You, as the parent, are your child’s number one “Coach.” As stated in Deuteronomy 6:4-9, we are given the commandment to impress God’s Word on our children. Bible Blast offers you a coaching support staff with you as the head coach.

If you are looking for a family devotional, a way to deepen your family’s knowledge of the Bible, Bible Blast is just for you. This road-map covers the Bible from the story of creation all the way to Paul’s declaration, “I fought the good fight, I finished my course.”

Bible Blast is a motivational, incentive-driven, reward-giving program with fun prizes to be earned each week. Once a week, Bible Blast meets together to quiz on the Bible passages read at home the previous week. In addition, Bible Blast has an excellent scripture memory program with lots of other incentives for memorization. Each week, we celebrate your child’s obedience and the family’s discipline in reading and studying God’s word.

Weekly, we ask that you, the parent, read the Picture Bible passages to your children, regardless of their ages. Let them relax and enjoy the pictures and the time with you. We encourage you to gather daily as a family for “family worship.” God told us to talk to our children about the Word of God. Reading to your children gives you the freedom to put the Bible down and share with them how God has affected your life as well as the lives of people in your family. Reading together will focus the entire family on what character issues need to be emphasized for the children. Whether you find yourself teaching as you drive down the road or teaching as you are lying down or getting up, the opportunities to teach your children are boundless when you are on the “same page” in God’s Word.

As a rewards-based program, Bible Blast relies on financial support from parents. In much the same way that you would buy your child’s soccer uniform, soccer cleats, and pay for the end-of-the-year pizza party/trophies, so too does Bible Blast function only with the committed financial support of the parents. All prizes are kept within a specific price range which the Bible Blast Director will set. If your child earns a prize off the prize table, just send that amount back in the offering the following week. This is the only way to allow Bible Blast to continue each week. Your stewardship is critical to the success of Bible Blast. Your Bible Blast director should not be the one to keep track of your financial responsibility. You are to keep track of your reward expenses. You will be extremely pleased with the results you will see in your children!

You hold in your hands a syllabus which is designed to supply you with answers to your questions as well as completely guide you through the program. In addition to this syllabus, you will need the text for this course. The Bible we use as a text is called, The Picture Bible published by David C. Cook and available through BibleBlast.com. Also, if you have a KINGDOM BOY or KINGDOM GIRL in the third through fifth grade, he/she will need to bring a Bible (not The Picture Bible) to the program. In addition to quizzing, the older children will participate in “Sword Drills” which are a fun way to exercise their skills in locating verses in the Bible. Please do not have a Bible with marked tabs on the sides. This defeats the child’s goal of knowing the location of the sixty-six books.

Parents, there are many opportunities during the Bible Blast year for “teachable moments”! One teachable moment is when your child does not answer all the questions correctly. Your response is similar to what you would say to your child after they strike out in baseball, "Good try. You’ll get it next time! We’ll keep practicing." Each child needs to learn how to win AND lose gracefully. These are the times when your child might miss a quizzing question because they chose to watch TV instead of learning the quizzing answers. Or, they may have waited until the last moment to start memorizing a verse and are unable to recite it up to standards. This is the time for you, the parent, to teach your child the benefits of self-discipline, good choices, and persevering.

Bible Blast takes very seriously the scripture training of your child. Although parents agree on the necessity of training up a child in God’s Word, they find it difficult to personally take the intentional responsibility to faithfully carry this out during the formative years. Especially fathers are challenged when it comes to finding their active roll with their children’s scripture training. Bible Blast meets that need. The “busyness” of life does take a toll, but consider this… Would you ever think of taking your child out of Math or English for a year (or more) because of your child’s overloaded schedule? Can you imagine thinking, “We just don’t have time for Math?” In the same way, we should not neglect training our children in God’s Word because of involvement in sports, music, or other activities. The Bible commands that we teach our children God’s Word. Bible Blast provides you with the tools to faithfully teach your children, and to do it in a disciplined, yet fun and easy way.

Sometimes, a child has done all they can do to prepare and still won’t earn the prize. Those types of disappointments are part of life. We encourage you to teach them how to deal with those disappointments. Show them how to persevere by talking through their emotions. Often it is more difficult for the parents than the children – but don’t forget your attitude and actions are observed and copied by your children!

Bible Blast believes conscientiousness is a much better teacher than consequences - reward works better than punishment. The objective of Bible Blast is, above all else, to teach children the Word of God. Bible Blast is an excellent and fun way to accomplish that and, at the same time, allows parents to influence their children for God. In this process, many parents report they themselves have learned more about the Bible than ever before!
